Rinse the rice well under cold running water until the water runs clear. (This helps the rice stay fluffy, like little clouds, and prevents it from sticking together).
In a pot, combine the rinsed rice with water and a pinch of salt. Bring to a boil.
Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and simmer for about 15-20 minutes, or until the rice has absorbed all the water. Do not lift the lid while it's cooking! (Patience, young padawan, is the art of perfect rice).
Remove the pot from the heat and leave it covered for another 5 minutes to let the rice "rest" and fluff up even more.
Fluff the cooked rice with a fork and stir in the ketchup. Add more salt if needed.
Serve hot and enjoy this quick, comforting meal.
- For a richer flavor, add a little olive oil and a pinch of dried herbs to the water when cooking the rice.
- To prevent rice from sticking, rinse it thoroughly with cold water before cooking. A common water-to-rice ratio is 1:2 (one part rice, two parts water).
- Serve with fresh cucumbers and tomatoes – they perfectly complement the simple, yet delicious, taste.
- If you're in the mood for a bit of a kick, stir in a pinch of red pepper flakes or a dash of hot sauce.
- Experiment with different flavored ketchups; each will add a new nuance to this classic combination.
