Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F). If using, lightly grease a small oven-safe dish (about 1 liter capacity) with butter or oil.
Scatter the bread cubes evenly in the prepared dish.
In a bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, grietine, and a pinch of salt until well combined. If using, whisk in cinnamon or vanilla extract.
Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread cubes in the dish, making sure to soak all the bread.
Gently press the bread down slightly to ensure it absorbs the liquid. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes to soak.
Scatter the strawberry pieces over the top of the bread mixture.
Bake for 25-35 minutes, or until the custard is set and the top is lightly golden.
Let it cool slightly before serving. Enjoy your cozy creation!
💡 Pro Tips:
- 🍞 Stale bread works BEST here! It soaks up the custard like a champ. Don't use super fresh, soft bread.
- 🌡️ Don't overbake! The center should be mostly set but still have a slight wobble. It'll firm up as it cools.
- 🔄 Feel free to swirl the strawberries through the batter instead of just laying them on top for berry goodness in every bite! 🍓
- 🌱 This is fantastic served warm, perhaps with an extra dollop of grietine or some whipped cream if you're feeling fancy (and have it!).
